Types of Mexican Residency
Temporary Resident Visa (Residente Temporal)
The Temporary Resident Visa is the most common starting point for expats moving to Mexico. Key features:
- Duration: 1 year initially, renewable for up to 4 years
- Work authorization: Available as a separate permission
- Path to permanent residency: After 4 years of temporary residency
- Multiple entry: Travel freely in and out of Mexico
Permanent Resident Visa (Residente Permanente)
The Permanent Resident Visa offers indefinite right to live in Mexico. You can qualify by:
- Completing 4 years as a temporary resident
- Meeting higher income requirements (approximately $43,000+ USD/year from investments or pension)
- Being married to a Mexican national
- Having Mexican children or parents
- Being a retiree over 65 with sufficient income
Income Requirements (2025)
Mexico's immigration authorities set income thresholds based on the minimum wage. For 2025, approximate requirements are:
- Temporary Residency (income/pension): ~$2,600 USD/month or 400x minimum wage from investments
- Permanent Residency (income/pension): ~$3,600 USD/month or 20,000x minimum wage in savings
Note: These figures change annually. Contact our office for current exact figures.
